EDIT: I've attempted to edit this slightly to take the anger out. It was misplaced and at times outright unfair. I apologize to those who might have been upset by it.
While at work last night I tried to get excited about the new Zelda game that would likely be shown at e3 this year. I tried. I really did, but for some reason I couldn't do it. I was interested, but excitement didn't come.
I saw the trailer and I felt disappointed. I guess I was expecting more content and instead we got more gameplay, which is interesting, but is more or less what you'd expect every time. WiiMotionPlus is interesting, but I'm more interested in the look of the game, the story of the game and the atmosphere of the game.
But how about some issues?
Twilight Princess Link. Why is he back? I know they've said it isn't a sequel to TP and thus this isn't the same Link, but it's the same damn model. Look at the official art. It's the same with brighter colors. Although, the official art is pretty nice. Doesn't really translate into the game so well for what we've seen with the nifty blue fading effect. It feels Twilight Princess with a The Wind Waker filter on it. Throw in a few more cartoonish elements like Link's weaponry and there you go. It's so stylistically disjointed. Say what you will about Majora's Mask, it had it's style down pat.
I know I'll be seeing the old, "you had your expectations too high" argument sooner or later, but the sick thing is that I had NO EXPECTATIONS and it STILL was disappointed. I'll definitely buy the game as it has the words "Legend of Zelda" on it, but I feel concerned about the direction it's going in. This isn't final judgment and it's probably much too much early to really be ranting about it. Still . . .
Oh, but Nintendo has that way of sucker punching me and then offering me sweet, delicious cake. Such as last year when we saw New Super Mario Bros Wii before Super Mario Galaxy 2 and were all saying "wtf?". And that sucker punch comes in the way of . . .
MUTHA FRAKING OCARINA OF TIME 3DS!
Sweet God I am so so so so much more excited about this than "Skyward Sword". What dos that even mean? It's got a graphical lift that makes it look more akin to OoT characters from SSBM and is going portable! Seriously, Nintendo could release this game on each new platform and I'd still buy it, but this looks to be a genuine real effort instead of a rerelease.
I'll buy Skyward Sword when it comes out in 2011 (or 2012,13,etc
) with a grin on my face. It's Zelda. Even at it's worst it still means something to me. I'm just concerned and sometimes I don't think before I rant.
Once again, my apologies.
